Research on kinship, its forms and meanings, has traditionally been the domain of anthropology, in which kinship studies played a large part for most of the 20th century. Starting in approximately the 1970s, some anthropologists began to question the assumptions of kinship studies, suggesting that, in the words of David Schneider, kinship should be understood as forms of "doing" rather than "being" - that is, as enacted practices, rather than fixed structures. In recent decades, such analysis has been taken up by cultural theorists, particularly queer theorists, who have considered what may be defined as kinship, its relationship to social, political and economic contexts, the range of practices that constitute it, how kinship works to define subjects and communities, and the political potential of claiming and performing various kinds of kinship. This seminar will consider theorizations of kinship in recent decades, look at the representation of kinship in a range of texts, and consider case studies from recent and current debates over kinship, such as those related to marriage laws, adoption rights, reproductive technologies, migration policies, welfare payments and more.
