Counseling in school contexts

Seminar goals

Designed for the prospective educator, this seminar provides an introduction to the issues of counseling in school. More specifically this seminar will answer the following questions: What is counseling in the educational context? What are the situations in which developing counseling skills might result crucial? What types of counseling skills should teachers develop or learn? Who are the actors involved in counseling, their roles, and responsibilities?

Teaching methods

The seminar consists of a combination of interactive lectures and group discussions. This combination enables the students to develop an analytic and critical attitude towards the topics under discussion.
Each meeting has the following structure:
Elaboration of the topic by the lecturer (30 minutes), group critical discussions (25 minutes), and practical activities (35 minutes; e.g., role play).

Literature

Selected journal articles and book chapters (in English and in German) to be read for the course meetings will be provided in the upcoming weeks and posted on Moodle.

Seminar assessment overview

Weekly seminar assignments: There will be assignments during the seminar in the form of discussion points that need to be submitted via Moodle before each meeting. For the first meeting, no discussion point is required. An open book exam will take place in the last meeting of the seminar (July 26th).

Note: International students are more than welcome. However, please bear in mind that this seminar is included in a bachelor's programme.
