The course will examine topics relating to halakha and theology as they appear in several modern Torah commentaries composed over the last century and a half. The commentaries to be studied represent the major religious movements in contemporary Jewry: Modern/Ultra-Orthodoxy, Reform, and Conservative/Masorti. Representative illustrations of halakha and theology will be taken from the following commentaries: Samson Raphael Hirsch Torah Commentary (1867-1878) Torah Temima Torah Commentary (1904)Hertz Pentateuch (1930-1935) Plaut Torah Commentary (1981) Art Scroll Torah Commentary (1993) Etz Hayim Torah Commentary (2001)
