The seminar will address the following issues: the philological and sociolinguistic background of Middle English, i.e. of the language between 1150 and 1500 Middle English dialects and the standardisation of speech Middle English spelling and sounds the lexicon of Middle English grammatical changes in the period of Middle English. Theoretical discussion will be combined with the reading and analysis of excerpts from pieces of Middle English literature from different times and different regions, with a special focus on Geoffrey Chaucer.
