In this course students will examine five tragedies: Titus Andronicus, Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, Othello and Antony and Cleopatra. Our reading will be guided by the Aristotelian poetics. The course provides an introduction to drama and traces the distinctive characteristics and deep structures of Shakespearean tragedy.
