This course considers how we describe and classify the sounds of a language. It deals with those areas of linguistics concerned with the sounds of speech, namely, phonetics and phonology, with special emphasis on English. We will consider how the sounds of language are produced and their classification (phonetics). A method of transcribing the sounds of speech using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) will be introduced with practical examples. An examination of the function of sounds within a language (phonology) will discuss the most important methods and theories of description. Examples from other languages will be used throughout the course. The aim of the course is the phonological classification of English. Emphasis will be on the British standard, but other varieties of English will be considered.
