Writers are known to be particularly alert to the problems of cultural diversity and cultural contact. We want to investigate into (critical) representations of British (cultural) identity in a number of exemplary texts and discuss their ambiguities between innovative, subversive potentials and mainstream affirmative undercurrents. This will include discussion of concepts of cultural mobilty and cultural contact as well as a focus on the articulations and representations of cultural Otherness inside a national culture. The course focuses very much on Black British literature written by Caribbean, Asian, African, and of other formerly British colonial origin. Writers of first, second and third generation diasporic background will be in the centre of our discussions, always from perspectives that problematise aspects of gender and ethnic identity next to analyses of aesthetic qualities.
