The semester course is designed as the second part of the yearly course on the musical liturgy of the High Holy-Days. Its purpose is to provide a liturgical and musical survey of the services on the Eve and Day of Yom Kippur and related prayers of Selichot. The prayer-chants and melodies will be discussed with reference to the structure of the liturgy and the customs (Minhagim) that accompany it. Reform and Conservative customs and texts will be discussed at the relevant classes. The musical Nusach will follow both Eastern European and German traditions as needed. The course is divided into ten Lessons. Some lessons will take up one class-session or more while others will be shorter.

Lesson 1: General Introduction to the Services of the Day of Atonement
• The biblical and Talmudic description of the Temple service on Yom Kippur
• The fast of Yom Kippur in Orthodox and Reform practices
• The development of the prayer books of Yom Kippur
• From Eve to Eve: The five services of Yom Kippur (Maariv, Shacharit, Musaf, Minchah, Neilah)

Lesson 2: The service of Kol Nidrei
• The historical development of the Kol Nidrei prayer
• The Kol Nidrei ceremony
• The Kol Nidrei chant: Its history and its place in the Ashkenazi tradition
• Traditional and modern versions of Kol Nidrei prayer and chant

Lesson 3: Maariv on the Eve of Yom Kippur
• The structure of the service and its basic chants
• Important recitatives and compositions for the Maariv service.
• Special Piyyutim (sacred poems) for the Eve of Yom Kippur


Lesson 4: Selichot (Atonement Prayers) and the Confessionals
• The Talmudic basis for the Selichot services
• The Selichot Services during the High Holy Day season
• Selichot as incorporated in the Yom Kippur services

Lesson 5: The Yom Kippur Shacharit Service
• Piyyutim (Yotzrot) for the benedictions before and after Shma
• Piyyutim (Kerovot) of the Amidah, chants and melodies

Lesson 6: Torah Reading and Yizkor Memorial Service
• The Torah portions and the Haftarot for the HHD, Orthodox and Reform practices
• The Yizkor service: Text ions and prayers in memory of the dead.

Lesson 7: Yom-Kippur Musaf Service and its Components
• The Piyyutim for Musaf
• The Avodah portion of the Musaf Service
• Martyrology of Yom Kippur

Lesson 8: Yom Kippur Afternoon Service
• Minchah of Yom Kippur and its chants
• Torah reading for Minchah
• Piyyutim for Minchah

Lesson 9: The Neilah Service (Closing the Gates)
• Piyyutim for Neilah
• Special chants for the Neilah Service
• Shofar blowing at the end of Yom Kippur

Lesson 10: Maariv, Havdalah and Kiddush Levanah
