This lecture course explores how the notion of a British national and cultural identity has evolved historically, from the early modern period onwards, in close relation to the experience of Empire. While on the one hand tracing the concrete development of British expansionism in its most important stages, the course will primarily focus on the complex ways in which Britains overseas adventures, successes and failures buttressed and possibly even triggered the notion of a specific British identity, not least in the evolution of a national literature, including travel writing, drama, epic poetry and, of course, the novel.
