Regarded as one of the central areas within Linguistics, with ambitious goals, numerous applications and influences, Semantics studies the ways in which words or sentences acquire meaning. Along with that comes the study of the processes by which speakers of a language can fill the empty frameworks of strings of words with meaningful and stable interpretations. This course is an introduction to the field of Semantics. We will discuss various topics related to the study of meaning, for example word semantics (how words relate to the world and to other words of a language), sentence semantics (how the meanings of sentences can be specified), pragmatics (how people use language and with what effects), meaning acquisition (how children learn the meanings of words) and other topics.
