Contrastive Linguistics seeks to compare the structural pattern of languages with each other. This class aims at providing you with an introduction to this field and comes along with a contrastive analysis of the English language, in comparison to German. The course is designed as a project seminar and particularly useful for future teachers as well as for future scholars in the field. The class consists of two parts: In part I, you will be equipped with the theoretical foundations underlying the concepts of contrastive analysis. In part II, you will apply this knowledge by developing and investigating your own original (small-scale) research project. This procedure will allow you to gather and work with empirical language data, i.e. get to know and experience the scientific research process as such. On top of that, the future teachers among you will be equipped with useful tools in order to address possible learner difficulties in EFL-students.
