‘The fans will love this!’ – What was once intended as a teasing promise has now become a gamble – because the fans will respond. Through the channels of multi-media mass communication fans have become increasingly vocal, visible and organised and they will confidently voice their approval or disapproval. The influence of fandom has therefore reached new heights – for better or for worse. The course critically investigates this fandom culture, its language, its function, its discourses and its outlets. It is not the aim of this class to make value judgements on the content of the individual fandoms, but to study the channels through which fans communicate and contribute to it. The seminar will therefore explore media outlets like Tumblr, fanfiction, fan videos, as well as events such as conventions, concerts, etc. We will look at discursive patterns that emerge within fandoms and reflect on their power of inclusion and exclusion.
