Our course approaches the museum from a series of critical perspectives that foreground, among other things, the representational role of museums in nation building, their relationship to memory and commemoration as well as their social roles and responsibilities. We will also address recent contestations of the rights to collections and the pedagogical representation of ‘other’ cultures. Students will engage with readings from the fields of cultural studies, memory studies and postcolonial studies and pair these with the close examination of current exhibitions as case studies.
