In this course, we will deal with one of the most enigmatic documents of the contact between European explorers and Pacific Islanders in the late 18th century. Tupaia's Map of the Pacific was drawn by a Raiatean master navigator for Captain James Cook and his crew during Cook's first voyage to the region. We will collectively discuss and research its compound meanings and multiple contexts in postcolonial perspective.
A course reader with reading assignments for each session will be made available on Moodle by the beginning of the semester.
Regular active participation (in line with the department's code of conduct) is expected. Short written paper (1000 words), marked or unmarked depending on study programme. Optional long term paper (5000 words).
