On the surface, time is one of the most banal and yet most complex concepts of philosophical, political and aesthetic reflection. Today, questions of temporality are vital when thinking about the postcolonial world, the techno-sphere and the structures of global financial capitalism. In fact, the entangled histories of modernity and colonialism are unthinkable without influential but ever-changing cultural conceptualizations of time that have shaped its technological and economic structures. This seminar will examine cultural, economic and technological renditions of time emanating from the North American continent since its European colonization. We will discuss how time and temporality have both shaped and changed the forces of colonialism, globalization, finance capitalism, the American Dream and American Exceptionalism.
