The United States and Australia share an extensive yet often neglected legacy of cultural, literary and political entanglements. As Paul Giles (2014) has recently shown, the cultural history of Australia has shaped “the formation of American Literature from the eighteenth century to the present day” and has inspired classic American writers to regard Australia either as “the little America on the other side” (Melville) or as an uncanny antipodean doppelganger. By the same token, North American settler colonialism has loomed large in the Australian cultural and literary imagination. This seminar will revisit key texts of American as well as Australian Literary history from an antipodean perspective and will realign its territorializations along postcolonial, transnational, transpacific and postcolonial coordinates.
