Just as any other language, English has not developed in total isolation. During its world-wide expansion, it has come in contact with a multitude of other languages and cultures. In this seminar, we will examine how contact-induced changes and processes have influenced and shaped the varieties of English (in the past and present). After a theoretical introduction to the field of contact linguistics, students will be required to work on their own small-scale research projects and present their findings in class at the end of the semester.
