Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements and grading. Please note: Bosco Li's course "Language, Culture and Society: The Hong Kong Context" will no longer take place. It will be replaced by a course called "Corpus-based approaches to African American Vernacular English (AAVE)" taught by Denisa Latic. If you register for this course in PULS, you will automatically be registered for Ms Latic's course. We apologize for any inconvenience.
New course description:
This seminar analyzes features of AAVE by creating an own small-scale corpus. The analysis of this corpus will not only give insights into the use of tense, negation, the copula verb 'be', but also to semantic features such as recurring topics, conceptual metaphors, cultural conceptualizations, and distinctive lexicon inherent in AAVE. Students will be introduced to basic corpus linguistic methods, which are then applied to own research projects in guided research sessions.
