Hulking Klingon warriors, ancient Elvish dwellers, adventurous Simlish pioneers, and living Esperanto rock stars - the speakers of these and other purposefully constructed languages typically not only put random sequences of sounds or symbols in a row to create meaningful words and sentences, but they evoke entire fictional worlds in the minds of their communities. By doing so, invented languages follow straight scientific rules.

This class introduces students to the underlying concepts of constructed languages (ConLangs). In the first part, you will be equipped with the theoretical basis of artificial languages, e.g. inventing a grammar, propositional logic, phonological systems, and different writing systems. Also, we will look at the role of pidgins, creoles, and mixed language systems, and how exactly the Whorfian hypothesis comes into play here. Concluding this first part, you will be equipped with a solid theoretical understanding of the underlying mechanisms of language systems, along with a toolkit that will allow you to either investigate the structures of an invented language of your choice, or even create your own language. The course concludes with a written documentation of your language project, and a very brief presentation of your results.
