The course investigates English phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics from the perspective of a school teacher. Beginning with an analysis of school books used in the English classroom we shall explore approaches to the description of English sounds, including phonetic transcription, the use of the tenses and the progressive form, the formation of passive constructions, the use of the modals, sentence types and word order constraints, conditional clauses and other grammatical phenomena. Furthermore, we shall look at word formation patterns and semantic relationships within lexical fields. Reference to the history of the English language for classroom purposes will also be discussed.
