Although it dates back almost a century now, the First World War still forms an important part of British cultural memory. Public interest in the “Great War” has even increased rather than decreased in recent years. This seminar for undergraduate students will examine why the First World War enjoys such a prominent place in British history. It will deal with the unfolding, progression, ending and aftermath of the conflict, covering various aspects of the war both home in Britain and abroad in the Empire. Topics included are, among others, the experience of trench warfare, the infamous Zeppelin raids on London, the disastrous Gallipoli campaign, the role of women in the war effort, domestic life during the war, the impact of the war on the colonies, the war at sea, the Irish question and the depiction of Germany in British war propaganda. The aim of this seminar is to illustrate how the war from 1914 to 1918 marked a watershed in British history, catalysing both social change and imperial decline, thus accelerating Britains transition into modernity at the dawn of the 20th century.
