BITTE BACHTEN SIE: Dieser Lektürekurs wird von Prof. Elvio Baccarini (Rijeka) im Kontext der Förderung von Dozentenmobilität (staff mobility) des Erasmus-Projekts in englischer Sprache durchgeführt. Der Kurs findet statt vom 04.12. (Montag) bis 07.12. (Donnerstag), jeweils 18h-20h

The basic goal of this reading class is represented by the critical analysis and application of an influential view of public justification of laws and public policies in the domain of enhancement biotechnologies. According to this view (first put forward by John Rawls), the basic value of justice in a well-ordered society is to respect each citizen as free and equal. We realize this ideal only if we justify laws and public policies by providing justification that is respectful of the plurality of views in a society, i.e. justification that is accessible to each citizen understood as free and equal. This means that we can appeal only to reasons for which we can reasonably expect that they may be endorsed by each citizen as free and equal. We must refrain to appeal to reasons that are controversial, accessible only from the standpoint of some worldviews.
Having this justificatory model in mind, the central subject of the reading class consists in its application of some issues of enhancement biotechnologies: 1. general enhancement of human capacities, with a focus on moral bioenhancement and the question of individual liberties, as well as social justice 2. enhancement of human lifespan 3. Human nature and transhumanism 4. Moral bioenhancement of psychopaths
