Hermann Yehezkel Cohen is the founder of the neo-Kantian school in Marburg and probably the most influential systematic Jewish philosopher of the 20th century. In his last book, Religion der Vernunft aus den Quellen des Judentums (1919), he interprets Judaism in philosophical terms, namely Kantian ethics, emphasizing autonomy and universalism as basic values originated in Judaism. In Cohen’s perception of religion, the messianic age becomes the idea of humanity and atonement becomes the way of individuating the self, both ideas donate a reorientation for philosophy itself. Cohens pupil, Franz Rosenzweig, is considered to be the first existentialist in modern Jewish thought. His magnum opus Der Stern der Erlösung (1921), is one of the most original and important work in Jewish philosophy. Rosenzweig presents a unique system of thought, combining philosophy and theology. His thought develops while pointing out the weaknesses of the nineteenth-century German idealist philosophical tradition that preceded him, as well as criticizing theology. Rosenzweig saw himself as a thinker that established a new thinking (Das neue Denken) that should replace the old Idealistic approach. This course will be dedicated to a careful comparative reading of Cohen and Rosenzweigs works, focusing on similarities and differences in their philosophical position and in their approach to religion and religiosity.
