NOTE: Room change. We will now meet in room 1.19.1.16.
This seminar will introduce students to the field of Animal Studies, which critically investigates and questions human-animal relations. We will read and discuss key theoretical works of animal studies to determine the guiding questions and preoccupations of the field and read literary works which pursue these or related questions.
Theoretical and secondary readings will be provided on Moodle. Students will be required to obtain copies of the two fictional works listed below. Both are easily available either new or second-hand. Any edition is OK.
Barbara Gowdy, The White Bone (first published 1998)
J.M. Coetzee, The Lives of Animals (first published 1999)
