Monday 4–6 pm, room 1.09.1.15 This course is designed to serve as an introduction to the key fields, questions, concepts and methods that students will encounter in the literary and cultural studies part of their degree in English and American studies. It is conceived as a foundation course which will familiarise students with four distinct but related fields: postcolonial studies, British cultural studies, American literature and culture, and British literature (Part I) and the kinds of approaches and questions that they will encounter over the course of their studies (Part II). The third part of this course aims to develop and improve students’ key skills in critical reflection, critical thinking, and critical writing—skills that they will need in later seminars. It is highly recommended that students take this course in the first year of their degree.
