The objective of this seminar is to provide students with a good understanding of the actors and institutions involved in global environmental governance. We will start by discussing milestones in the development of global environmental governance, examine what United Nations organizations work on environmental issues, and look at the genesis and structure of environmental conventions (such as the Rio conventions on climate change, biodiversity and desertification). Building on the example of climate change, students will then learn about the characteristics of an international regime and the role of sub-national actors and transnational networks in policy making. We will finally discuss the roles of regional organizations, corporate actors, non-governmental organizations, science and consumers.
Students need to be proficient in English (e.g. being able to read academic literature and participate in class discussions).
Studienleistung:

Prüfungsleistung:
Write a term paper.
