This seminar provides an introduction to texts from high to late modernism. We will look at modernist prose and poetry and analyse how they break with traditional literary modes as many modernist writers felt them to be too obsolete or inadequate to capture the issues of their time. Reading List: Virginia Woolf: Mrs Dalloway James Joyce: Dubliners Jean Rhys: Voyage in the Dark We will also read texts by William Faulkner, T.S. Eliot, Dorothy Richardson and Katherine Mansfield. As you can see from the reading list, the course is designed with a heavy reading load. Please be aware of this and if possible, start reading Woolfs Mrs Dalloway before the semester begins.
