This course aims at interrogating the idea of modernity as salvation. It is designed to give an overview of approaches to modernity and salvation. In a second step, we will apply these theories to literary examples. Throughout the semester, you will create and refine research theses, which you will work into term papers. You are required to briefly introduce one text for discussion in class.

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to
– define and classify different approaches to modernity and salvation
– contrast, discuss, and criticize theoretical texts
– apply theory to different literary examples
– formulate research theses and write research papers

Literatur

Please read the following books before the start of the semester:
Mulk Raj Anand - Untouchable
Narendra Jadhav - Outcaste (preferably the Viking 2003 edition)

We will also be discussing the video game Bioshock (2K Games, 2007) so please familiarize yourselves with its aesthetics and story line by playing or via playthrough footage.
