Britain’s tight Brexit vote of 2016 is generally taken to express deep divisions across the nation: 52% vs. 38%, England vs. Scotland vs. Wales vs. Northern Ireland, liberal vs. conservative, old vs. young, affluent vs. poor, etc. Our class sets out to investigate contradictory reactions to the referendum across politics and the media, as Britain continues its negotiations with the European Union in 2019. We will also consider a variety of creative negotiations of the referendum by probing into the imaginative power of literature, film, comedy and other media. How do these cultural texts imagine a post-Brexit Britain?
