British women writers of the 1930s are often neglected in English literary history. The decade, situated between two world wars, was characterised by political and ideological conflict and economic instability. Aesthetically, the continuous influence of modernism as well as traditional forms like the domestic novel shaped the literary landscape of the 1930s. In this seminar, we will read novels which all deal with these conflicts and contradictions in their own way.
Nancy Mitford: Wigs on the Green
Rhys: Good Morning, Midnight
Winifred Watson: Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day
Rosamond Lehmann: The Weather in the Streets
