In this course we study how the order of affixes in a morphologically complex word is established. We will examine whether affix order is determined on a languae-specific basis or whether there are cross-linguistic patterns/rules that determine the order of affixes. Furthermore, we will compare formal morpho-syntactic approaches to affix order. Participants will also learn about approaches to the formation of complex words.
A list with the relevant literature will be provided in the first session.
basic knowledge of morphological processes (derivation, inflection) and principles that play a role in word formation (e.g. subcategorization)
basic knoweldge of sentence structure (categories and their hierarchical organization, i.e. predicate-argument-structure and functional verbal projections)
all of this is usually taught in general introductions to morphology and syntax at the BA-level
term paper, presentation
MSc students in Linguistics interested in the principles of word formation (and also syntax), formal modeling of generalizations, cross-linguistic variation, the interaction of morphology with syntax, smeantics and phonolgy
