This block seminar will comprise of a series of experimental creative writing workshops to introduce you to a range of approaches for exploring questions of the self, as a starting point for writing monologues, plays, performance texts, poems, songs, raps and storytelling that connect to wider socio-political concerns. We will simultaneously examine pre-existing performance texts from African diasporic traditions of Britain and the USA in particular, that highlight the politics of the personal, often through the experience of migration. We will consider how and why autobiographical writing has emerged as a feature of modern writing for performance, from theatre to hip hop. The emergence of autobiographical work will be historically contextualized within post-colonialism and struggles for equality in race, class, gender and sexuality. Our participatory approach will be theoretically and ethically located within the locus of Brazillian theorist and theatre director Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, the Southern African concept of ubuntu and in the spirit of Muhammad Ali’s poem, ‘Me, We’. There will be space to write, read work aloud, reflect, debate, offer and receive peer and tutor feedback and support.
