While many people in the world have heard about Indian superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan, it is interesting that popular Hindi cinema (generally known as Bollywood) was virtually unknown in the west before it made it to European and American DVD markets some 20 years ago with blockbusters like Lagaan or Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (both 2001). This trend went together with a new interest in Desi culture that also included food, fashion and travel – welcomed by some for providing new and consumable life-style elements.

However, there are some popular misconceptions about Indian cinema. While Bollywood is certainly a dream factory and produces escapist fantasies, most of its films are not simply celebrating romantic comedy but focus on social and political issues, often reflecting a globalised and postcolonial context. Moreover, Indian cinema is not just Bollywood: there are, on the one hand, numerous regional cinema industries producing films in local languages such as Tamil, Telugu or Bengali, and there have also been influential tendencies of alternative and Avantgarde film-making ranging from the Parallel Cinema of the 1950s to more recent independent productions.

This course will give a comprehensive overview of ed examples from various strands of Indian cinema in order to understand the films and cinema traditions by their aesthetic principles and in their social, political and historical contexts.

The format for this course will be synchronous online classes (with some asynchronous elements/assignments), where meetings will be held via zoom (and these will always take place during the time slot allotted to the course on PULS)
Leistungsnachweis In-class presentation or short essay (1000 words, guiding questions will be issued in advance) if you want to receive a mark for the course. Every student (marked or unmarked) is asked to provide at least three answers or contributions to forum discussions.
