The speech signal is immensely varied and can convey a vast amount of information. To fully appreciate and understand its richness, a solid grasp of signal processing is essential. This course introduces the main signals for speech – acoustic, behavioural, and articulatory signals. The course is lab-based in nature and, therefore, it has a strong emphasis on practical and analytical work using a range of data. It complements more theory-oriented topics in linguistics, such as language acquisition, phonology and psycholinguistics, by delving deeper into the methodological issues of data collection, processing and analysis. The course is particularly useful for future research projects and potentially career options in speech technology. The main computer programs to be used will be Praat, R and MATLAB – students can download these free for use at home. Data and course materials will also be available on Moodle (link; please contact the course leader for the key). The language of instruction for the course is German, course materials are in English.

Sessions will always take place in the Linguistics PC-pool (Haus 14, Raum 2.22). It is recommended to bring own laptops, but make sure you can access the WiFi and you have already installed the software to be used (announced on Moodle) prior the classes. Alternatively, you can use the local PCs in this room, for which you need to obtain a user account (which is different from your university account); this involves filling out a form which can be found on the door of the adjacent room.
