This seminar course will provide an opportunity to study plays created collaboratively by South African writers / theatre makers that were crucial in challenging the white supremacist system of racial segregation that was apartheid and dealing with its after effects. Collaborative plays will include Woza Albert! by Percy Mtwa, Mbongeni Ngema and Barney Simon, The Island and Sizwe Bansi is Dead by Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona, Ubu and the Truth Commission by Jane Taylor and the Handspring Puppet Company as well as the tutor Mojisola Adebayo's own collaboration with Mamela Nyamza, I Stand Corrected. The course will provide an opportunity to not only read the plays and understand their contexts but practically explore their creative processes through games, exercises, improvisation devising and writing tasks inspired by the South African style known as Township Theatre. These methods will be applied to inspire the student's own collaborative and creative, anti-racist artistic activism.
