This seminar provides a cultural linguistic/cognitive sociolinguistic perspective to English as spoken by the black population in South Africa. It will approach Black South African English (BSAE) as a heterogeneous variety that varies depending on the (African) mother tongues and the varying degrees of competence of its speakers. It will focus mainly on the complex interplay between linguistic structures, cultural patterns and cognitive-conceptual mechanisms of meaning making.
