Family is a core unit in society, most humans are born into one and to a large extent are defined by it. The degree to which family defines us, however, will be mediated by the larger context in which our family is situated. In the first part of the seminar, we will study what families are, how they are composed and how social dynamics develop within them. We will think about these questions both from historical and cross-cultural perspectives. In the second part, we will study how inequalities are present, created, and reinforced in different dimensions and spheres of social life. We will also think about the role of family within these dynamics. In the third and final part, we will study how different policies, from governments and organizations, can work to mitigate or reinforce the inequalities we studied in the second part. Some of the case studies and dimensions of focus will be molded based on the interests expressed by class participants during the first sessions. Slots for presentations will also be allocated in the first weeks. Please try to be there from the start.
