A-bar dependencies - Einzelansicht

In this seminar we wil study the cross-linguistic properties of A'-dependencies, which typically involve displacement of a constituent to the left periphery of the clause (e.g, wh-movement, focus ex-situ, relativization). Topics will include

• how to distinguish A and A' dependencies
• how to derive A'-dependencies (base-generation vs. movement vs. prolepsis) and diagnostics for the different derivations
• locality / the length of movement steps (successive-cyclic movement, phases, reflexes of movement)
• maybe: the nature of the element left behind in the base position of movement (copy theory, multi-dominance)

We will see data from various different (especially non-Indo-European) languages, which exhibit morphological properties that will allow us to distinguish proposals on the above topics from the literature.
