This is a 2-day workshop (Thu+Fri 04.+05. April 2024) about planning your career in astrophysics academia, i.e. the path to a professor or permanent scientific researcher position. It is intended mainly for PhD students and postdocs, whose next career step will be finding a postdoc or assistant professor position. Master students may also attend, but finding a PhD position will not be the main focus of this workshop.
We will cover a range of topics, with a mix of information sessions, practical exercises, and Q&As:
- What does a competitive CV look like for different academic stages?
- What do I need to plan for to be/become competitive?
- The academic job market: time lines, tips, tricks
- The research statement - what is a selection committee looking for?
- Convincing figures for applications
- "Every talk is a job talk" - seminar talks as door openers
- The academic job interview
- and other topics, to be determined from requests by the participants.
Please sign up via PULS if you are a PhD student; for postdocs, please send an email to Andrea Brockhaus (andrea@astro.physik.uni-potsdam.de). This workshop has capacity for ca. 25 participants.
