Semantics of Questions - Einzelansicht

Questions exist in every language, and they can be analyzed under many different perspectives: prosody, syntax, semantics, pragmatics. Following Dayal (2017)'s handbook, this Blockseminar (taught in English) aims at giving an overview of phenomena related to questions, from matrix questions (Where are you?) to embedded questions (I wonder where you are), from constituent-questions (What book do you prefer?) to polar questions (Do you like it?), from canonical questions (What is your name?) to non-canonical ones (Can you pass me the salt, please?).

Practical information:

• The introduction session (90 minutes) will take place ONLINE on the 15.04 (https://uni-potsdam.zoom.us/j/65464770274 password: 00001111).
• The Blockseminar will take place onsite in September (6 x 3h sessions). In order to pass the course, you will have to prepare a 15-minutes presentation on one of the topics, which you will present at the beginning of a class.
• An additional session (90 minutes) will be offered after the Blockseminar to wrap-up the class and discuss Modulprüfung topics (for interested students).
