Data is becoming ever more important for students and researchers in the social sciences across different sub-disciplines including economics, business, political science, and sociology. Data skills are also important for the job market outside of academia, such as in data science & programming, business intelligence, data journalism, market research, monitoring & evaluation as well as basic reporting.
This course is a hands-on, practical introduction to students of the social sciences to the R programming language along with basic concepts in data analysis. R is one of the fastest growing, most popular and extremely versatile statistics package and programming language in the world. It is free and has a large community that improves it continuously.
The course covers the basic first steps in importing, loading, cleaning, visualizing and analyzing datasets. Students will learn how to write their own interactive report and understand basic concepts in programming. As this is an introductory course, it is not recommended for students with prior advanced programming experience.
For each session, you will have to prepare the topic of the week by reading an online script, which will be provided to the students and is accompanied by YouTube Videos. I will then provide some additional background in the weekly session and we will go through some in-class exercises together. Additionally, there are exercises that the the students will have to complete at home, using a data set of choice (help in selecting a data set will be provided).
The course will be held in English.
To complete the course, the students will have to complete the at-home exercises.
To complete the module, the students will have to complete a graded online exam. We will prepare for this exam together in class.
