"The Tempest" is one of the most important plays of William Shakespeare. The play has been as an allegory of colonialism, settler colonial states, epistemic violence, and racism for many years in academic readings of the play in the postcolonial framework. Building on this, we will be reading this play alongside at least one of its adaptations as a novel in the winter semester. The class will be primarily be about postcolonial readings of the text by going through close readings of the play text. The students will be expected to read the entire play and the novel Indigo by Marina Warner as required readings and each class would have academic readings to aid close readings of the text.
All reading material will be made available on Moodle. However, students are welcome to pick up a copy of Shakespeare's The Tempest and Indigo by Marina Warner ahead of the class.
At least one class of this semester will be async classes where students will be required to read and do writing exercises instead of a regular class.
