Spinoza, Mendelssohn, Maimon - Einzelansicht

The seminar will focus on three modern Jewish philosophers who are exceptional in that they figure prominently in both modern Judaism and the history of philosophy. In order to understand the interrelationships between the two sides of these philosophers, we will examine Spinoza's biblical exegesis and how it is grounded in his philosophical system; Mendelssohn's attempt to establish the validity of the commandments on the one hand, and the validity of metaphysics on the other; and Maimon's exegesis of Maimonides and its relationship to his exegesis of Kant.
