In this course we will explore the life and work of the Ba'al Shem Tov (Master of the Good Name), often deemed the founder of Hasidism, the radical and controversial pietist, enthusiastic sect that developed in mid-18th-century Ukraine. In addition, we will look at the lives and work of some of his followers, who made up the second and third generations of Hasidic leadership.
The course will be conducted in English.
Requirements for credit points: A final project that will take the form of a research paper, short film or video, graphic work (comic), PowerPoint presentation, etc. (7.000 characters min.), on a topic chosen by the student in coordination with the instructor. Regardless of format, the presentation must have both a descriptive and analytical component.
