This seminar will take a Cultural Studies approach to petrocultures. Petrocultures is a way of thinking about the resources and externalisations of fossil fuel cultures. While it is possible to examine the ways in which (almost) all contemporary cultural expressions are dependent on fossil fuels, in this seminar we will turn our attention to moments that foreground this connection. Our focus will be on the intimate connections between fossil fuels and Western modernity, and we will explore transcultural connections and conflicts from across the (Anglophone) world. In addition to foundational readings from the energy humanities, possible texts and concerns will include films such as Mad Max, fictional texts such as Helon Habila's Oil on Water, and computer games such as Sim City or GTA.
