This course presents a comprehensive overview of testing and evaluation through the perspective of English language teaching. It aims to familiarize students with basic concepts and principles of testing, competence and performance in language as well as with the issues and considerations in the conceptualization, design, construction and administration of language tests. The course will dwell on the process of testing and assessing students’ second language proficiency with respect to different language skills (e.g., listening, speaking, reading and writing) and language content (e.g., grammar and vocabulary) in the second language classroom and the steps involved in this process. Participants will have opportunities to evaluate existing tests and assessment procedures, and design test and assessment instruments.
