Storytelling offers excellent opportunities for language learning and can be a powerful method in primary language education.
In this seminar we will explore the benefits of using stories and picturebooks in the classroom and discuss their potential for the development of vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading and writing skills - both with beginners and with more advanced learners.
After taking a look at the theoretical foundations of storytelling and literary learning, we will discuss criteria for selecting suitable books for different learner groups, covering both well-known, "classic" children's books as well as recently published books that focus on important topics, e.g. diversity and inclusion, social justice or global challenges. On a practical level, we will focus on methodological aspects and questions of lesson planning and task design. You will get the opportunity to try out storytelling techniques, learn how to introduce and present stories in class and get to know a variety of projects that encourage students to create and tell their own stories (e.g. with the help of digital tools/story-making apps).
Course participants will design lesson plans and material to be used in the classroom.
