This advanced bachelor course provides an overview of psycholinguistic approaches to reference resolution. We will focus on how we use and interpret different types of pronominal elements, which require referential dependencies to be established in order to receive an interpretation. The following specific questions will be addressed: How can we study reference resolution experimentally? What information sources and constraints determine the choice and interpretation of referentially dependent expressions? How do structural and non-structural constraints interact during pronoun resolution? How do we interpret covert anaphors? Are reference resolution preferences subject to cross-linguistic and cross-population variation?
This course presupposes familiarity with basic linguistic concepts and terminology. Prior completion of PN-E "Introduction to language processing" or equivalent is strongly recommended.
