This advanced Masters course examines real-time grammatical processing in a non-native language (L2), focusing on sentence-level phenomena. Specific questions to be explored include the following: What role does the ability to process the input play in L2 acquisition? Do non-native speakers process the L2 input in the same way as native speakers of the target language do? If not, what are the differences? Which individual-difference variables affect non-native speakers' processing of the L2? How can L2 processing behaviour be accounted for by existing psycholinguistic models of language processing?
This course presupposes a solid grounding in syntax as well as basic familiarity with current issues, models and methods used in experimental sentence processing research. The course is not suitable for first-semester students.
