Assessing the state of scientific evidence in empirical economics is more and more becoming a key challenge not only for researchers, but also for policy makers. The fast growing amount of empirical literature calls for efficient methods of screening and assessment. The provision of systematic reviews and meta-analyses is meant to cope with this challenge by applying rigorous and transparent criteria for information processing.
This course is about the principles of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Examples will be taken from active labor market policies, welfare policies, housing policies, financial education, development policies, climate policies and the like. The role of replications as a validation tool is also addressed. The course aims at enabling students to critically assess systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Students will be given the opportunity to run their own meta-analyses.
